Land Acknowledgement for Beckwith, Lanark, Ontario, Canada

April 13, 2021

We acknowledge that we live and work in the Southeast Region of the Anishinabek Nation, on the stolen lands of the Anishinabewaki and Omamiwininiwag  (Algonquin) peoples. Promised in Treaty 27, 1819. (Source www.native-land.ca ).

The languages spoken on this land were Anishinaabe and Mohawk.

The Anishinabek Nation established the Union of Indians (UOI) in 1949, as they did not legally exist before. Once becoming a legal entity they were able to pursue agreements that were legally-binding. The UOI represents 39 First Nations across most of Ontario. The area is split into four regions, each has a Grand Council Chief. The Chiefs represent a combined population of 65000 citizens.

As part of our acknowledgement, we have been learning about the language and history. We have also been reading more about the historical and past issues still affecting the indigenous people.
